How Does Acupuncture Work?

According to the theory of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Qi
(Chinese term for energy), runs in special meridians to drive blood
flow, nourish organs and tissues, defend the body, and promote
vitality.  If a person's Qi is disturbed her health will deteriorate.
Acupuncture aims to regulate Qi and restore its circulation to
normal status.

Modern medicine has no satisfactory explanation for how
acupuncture works, however, numerous studies have demonstrated
that acupuncture activates complex central neurohumoral
mechanisms, increases brain blood flow, and promotes
tissue-healing processes
What Conditions Can Be Treated With Acupuncture?

Most medical conditions can benefit from acupuncture.  However, it is
particularly effective in treating the following conditions:
Acute and chronic pain
Sinusitis, sore throat, asthma, bronchitis and allergies
Gastrointestinal ailments - Nausea, vomiting, gastritis, constipation
Substance dependencies to alcohol, nicotine, and drugs
Psychological disorders including stress, depression, anxiety
Peripheral neuropathy and neurological rehabilitation, paralysis
Urinary and menstrual spasms and cramps
Promotion of overall health and well being!
How Many Treatments Will I Need?

It depends.  Some acute cases may require only 1-2 or several
sessions while some chronic cases and substance dependency cases
may require more frequent and longer treatment courses.  The average
course is 2-3 times per week for 4 weeks
Does Acupuncture Hurt?

Most patients do not feel the insertion of the very fine acupuncture
needles.  Some patients may feel a little prick, not unlike a mosquito
bite, when a needle touches a nerve ending.

When needles penetrate deeper into the tissue patients usually have
special needle sensations, such as heaviness, numbness, soreness,
distension, and even slight electric shock.  The presence of needle
sensations suggests good response to acupuncture.
What Responses to Treatment Will Occur?

Most patients with pain and/or tension feel relaxed and relieved
during treatment.  Many patients may feel an increase in energy,
lightness, and buoyancy due to the stimulating effects of
acupuncture.  Speed of response to treatment varies considerably
from patient to patient, and with each condition.
